Yours truly on Four Magazine

As I get older, and wise I feel better about just hanging loose, and being myself. This is a very honest interview. Thank you to Four Magazine for including me in this sexy as hell issue! Four is based out of Charlotte, proud of artistic south!

FOUR is a new quarterly publication created to showcase timeless imagery and creativity. With a rich visual aesthetic and editorial voice, we identify creative moments and seeks out the beautiful homes, iconic fashion, artistic expression, and diverse culture that dwells within and around the city we call home.

Remember when Paige came over? Those are the images we were able to use, I am so happy with how it all turned out. Thanks ladies.

I am so curious. What kind of questions would you ask if you were interviewing me?

  1. What advice would you give an artist (ok, it's me) as far as promoting themselves. Do you have to give yourself a pep talk the bathroom mirror, in the manner of Jack Donaghy, or is it a skill you've honed and it's no biggie.

    1. HA! Yes, sometimes there is mirror talk involved. Basically I say be as exposed as possible. Find out who you want to buy your art, and "hang around" online around them. Blog, instagram...all of the social stuff. Get gallery reps, go to events, fairs, groups. The more people you touch, the more info you get the more leads.

  2. Thanks for posting this- it was such a great read and I enjoyed learning more about you. I paint in private, but maybe someday I'll share.
    Have a great day!

  3. I'd have asked about your inspiration for color schemes - especially considering that decorators have designed entire rooms around your paintings! I LOVE the way you combine colors in your art. Maria

    1. Maria. Thanks for your comment! I save color pairings or groupings that I really like. I have a pin board with tons of images. Mostly photography. Sometimes I actually create color palettes from images that I like to look at, mine or anything that I find. Thank you! Color is my favorite!

  4. Love, love your work! And love reading about artist's processes. I'm a textile designer and sometimes find the hardest part about a project is getting over the intitial blank page/screen. Do you ever feel that way? If so, what do you do? And if that never happens to you... Lucky you! :)

    1. Sarah, Yes! I can see how this is a problem. I learned how to conquer this in design school. 1. create limitations, as if you were working for a client. Only four colors, here they are. Or, a theme, and stick to it until you really hash it all out. Something unrelated, and amazing with come to you, especially with a lot of practice. 2. Begin right away with one gesture, color, idea. Just one thing, right away. Then react to it. Sometimes its good to start like five things, then put them away. When you are have a hard time getting started just pull one of the just started pieces out and it will seem fresh, and original to you. Good luck!

  5. What advice would you give to someone that wants to pursue this kind of career? Especially someone who loves drawing and painting but doubts that they are talented enough to make it a viable career option.

    1. I would say this: Draw and Paint a lot. A whole lot. Make a goal for yourself like 1. I will create three new originals a week, or something like that, something that pushes you. Just keep making art and show your work on your blog whenever you feel like it is something you want to share. You need to be known as someone who creates, because it will pull on someone's heart strings somewhere. Even if you don't feel confident about your own work. And speaking of confidence, you will gain it the more work you create. Remember, you have to make ten shitty drawings before one good one comes out. Doesn't seem like anyone says that anymore, but its soooo true! Just keep at it, persistence!!
