Mermaids Tears

My best friend moved away, sad I know. To LA of all places, could she go farther away? Sheesh. Anyway, O and I are on our way (right now!) to visit her. I am super looking forward to seeing Janey, we even have a girl day planned where no boys are allowed! She and I met a few years ago when she re-connected with O on facebook. She and O go way back, and they even used to date! Whenever I tell my friends this the reaction is always so interesting. One friend was so appalled she could hardly keep a straight face around us. I personally don't give a hoot, I mean fifteen years ago they dated for a few months, whats the big deal?

We hit it off right away. We both have immigrant parents, and are always talking about what it was like growing up in a little bubble of a different culture. Also parents who are form "the old country" do things that regular American parents just don't do. This is a huge bonder. Basically though we get each other, and are pretty much sisters form another mister.

Anyway, in anticipation of my fun trip, I did my nails all special. This color is called Mermaids Tears. I do my own manicures (I used to get pedis with Jane!). Mostly I am pretty good at it, and it lasts about a week. The only problem is the occupational hazard of being a painter on your manicure. This is a regular day of paint splatter.

I miss my puppies already!

So would you be friends with a girl your husband used to date? I am so curious. Any recommendations for cool shit in LA?

  1. If neither of those involved have an issue then I don't see what the big deal is. Especially with the time lapse! 15 years ago? That's child's play. Have a fab time in L.A.!

  3. So I got my nails done in NYC in honor of your visit! They're a shimmery gray color. Can't wait to squeeze you!!!

  4. I totally relate. My best friend in high school was a guy. We went everywhere together. Never left eachothers side. Even made out a few times. Now he is one of my husband's best friends and I am friends with his wife. I was actually even in their wedding (albeit, sort of as a fill-in). Sometimes our spouses get a little spacey when we talk about all the stuff we did back when, but mostly it's just cool to all be friends.

  7. I have always been good friends with one of my hubby's exes.. they were dating when we met! Of course, it took him 12 years to finally ask me out and in the meantime, I dated one of HIS best friends.. we have a long, twisty history! ;-)

Check out Skidmore Contemporary in L.A. They rep some really fabulous artists!

  8. I tried with a few but honestly? They were a hot messy-mess. Drank to much, dated freaky guys, it was just too weird. I remember asking my husband what the hell he saw in me if these were the types he had been dating! If on the west side try hard to get over to Abbot Kinney in Venice. An Art-food-clothing overload of amazing-ness.

  9. Hubs and I are really good friends with one of MY exes and his wife. Since we dated when we were so young, I kinda feel like he's more family than anything else (shudder), so I don't find this weird at all! Annnd, my best friend of 25 years lives in San Diego and I agree - it totally blows balls. Stupid distance.

In other news, I posted pics of your baddass painting in the condo! What whaaat!

  10. Have fun in L.A. Michi!! When are you coming up to Seattle?? And yes, I'd be happy to be friends with my husband's x. But she started writing nasty emails about me... so it didn't happen. ;-)

  12. Haha, my husband (of almost five years!) went on several dates with my (still) best friend before he and I got together. She was the Maid of Honor in our wedding and is still very precious to both us... sometimes, it just works, I guess! :)

  13. I can, and am! My brother has some weirdness as his (very serious) ex from HS lives three houses away from him - We live in a small city and my brother's family lived in their neighborhood for 10 years before it happened. They only found out becuase his wife actually ran into her at a neighborhood ladies party. Awkward! But my SIL has a great attitude about it: "I won!" HA!

So, I lived in LA for four years and there are endless things to do. The recommends above are great, as well as LACMA and MOCA, but above everything else in LA, I would say go to the Getty. Take an entire day and savor it all. You will not regret it!

  14. One of my husband's best friends was his highschool sweetheart. She's one of my dear friends now. Hell, that was decades ago and they were kids. Who cares? She's a wonderful woman and we love her.

Your nail color is so terrific. Very springy. I'm painting (rooms/walls, not canvases) and cannot wait to clean up my paws afterward. Have a great trip!

  15. I would be friends with her especially if we have things to connect & bond over, no one is ever so rich or happy as to throw away a good friend, besides the past is just that & if your husband wanted her they would have been together. that just shows your high level of maturity & security with yourself & I think thats beautiful. There's tons of cool shit to do in L.A. venture over to hollywood blvd, go to west hollywood for dining and possible star sightings, if you can visit Disneyland in Anaheim, take a trip to beverly hills for shopping, more dining and star sightings, and try to check out as many museums as possible they have several cool ones there. I love your blog, glad I came across it. I am now following you! :) enjoy your trip!
